More man games lost to concussion in the NHL

Allsports article on the rash of concussions in hockey. Are there more now than ever or is it just that they are reported more. How can the NHL reduce them.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

It is a little sad when so much of the hockey sports news and sports on the web is centered around the concussion issues that are plaguing the game these days. The latest player to fall victim is Chris Pronger of the Philadelphia Flyers.   Earlier the Flyers lost their and the leagues leading point getter Claude Giroux to concussion.

Chris Pronger, lost for the season and playoffs with concussion symptoms.

The face of the game,  Sydney Crosby was put back on the shelf after a seemingly innocent enough play against the Boston Bruins. With the amount of talent laid up you could likely put together a Stanley Cup contender.

Chicago Bears Playoff hopes fizzle as they get Tebowed

Allsports article on Tim Tebow getting another come from behind win, this time over the Chicago Bears. A Marion Barber Brain Cramp helped Tebow's cause greatly.

Tim Tebow, Quarterback for the Denver Bronco's

So mark it up that the Chicago Bears have become the latest victims of Tim Tebow, the Denver Bronco’s young quarterback who just seems to come back in the nick of time to win the game for the Bronco’s. Allsports would say that right now he is the story for the NFL in the sports news and sports on the web. His team started the season with one win and four losses, sitting at the bottom of the AFC West. Enter Tebow and since he has taken over from Kyle Orton, running the Bronco’s offense, the team is 7 wins and one loss and moved into first place in the division. The Bronco’s have won six straight games and Tebow has orchestrated the wins in dramatic fashion, coming from behind in the fourth quarter in most cases.

Media Giants are Maple Leafs new Owners

Allsports article on Bell and Rogers joining forces to purchase MLSE for the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan for a whopping $1.32 billion. Is it good for the fans?

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

So it is official, Canada’s two biggest electronic media giants have joined up to purchase the 79.5% majority stake in the parent company of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors, ACC and more from the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan. Big news for sports news and sports on the web and even bigger dollars in the bank roll it took to make the deal. The teachers cashed out for a whopping 1.32 billion dollars, which is based on the enterprise value of just over 2 billion. Remember way back in March when I wrote an article that was a little tongue and cheek about buying the Maple Leafs that was titled “How would you like to own the Toronto Maple Leafs“. Well the teachers finally let the money talk and the sale has come to fruition.

Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment

BCE, the parent company of Bell and Rogers Communication, the two major media giants in Canada formed a partnership for the purchase. Strange bedfellows to be sure because they are in direct competition with each other for the public’s hard earned money in the electronic entertainment industry.

Leafs take out Rangers after Bruin Mauling

The Toronto Maple Leafs get back on a winning note after back to back losses against the Boston Bruins. It was a good 3-2 win against a hot team in New York.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com
Toronto Maple Leafs Logo

Allsports here for some hockey sports news and sports on the web. I will talk a little about the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fight to get back to respectability. The Leafs have been plagued by injuries to some of their starters but have still managed to stay up in the top half of the Eastern Conference. They were playing some pretty good hockey until they ran into the juggernaut called the Boston Bruins, who mauled the Leafs in back to back games. Mind you the Bruins have been  having their way with pretty much everyone they face these days and went 12-0-1 in the month of November. The Bruins are pretty tough to beat with solid defense and four big and balanced lines. They play strong consistent hockey and pay close attention to detail. Tim Thomas is also carrying on where he left off last year and maybe even more frugal at giving up goals. Yes the Bruins are looking very good as a strong contender to defend their championship if they can stay healthy.

Boudreau quick to bounce back behind the bench

Allsports article on Bruce Boudreau bouncing back behind the bench as the Anaheim Ducks coach after only 67 hours of unemployment. Its tough on Carlyle he still gets paid

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

So it didn’t take long for Bruce Boudreau to change his address and find employment in the hockey world. He is starting to make a few waves in the hockey sports news and sports on the web. In fact Boubreau was only unemployed for about 67 hours before he was snapped up by another NHL team.

Bruce Boudreau hired by Ducks to replace Randy Carlyle

The Anaheim Ducks, who are having a brutal season tied the can to their coach Randy Carlyle and brought Bruce Boudreau on board. Management thought that Boudreaus easy going nature and relaxed attitude might be just the change the team needed because they sure were not responding to Randy Carlyles regimented and strict style anymore.

NHL coaching is a tough job, you are hired to be fired

Allsports article on the two NHL coaches that l were fired Monday. Paul Maurice was replaced by Kirk Muller while Dale Hunter got Bruce Boudreau's job in Washington

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

In the hockey sports news and sports on the web this week, two coaches in the NHL fraternity lost there jobs due to one of two reasons, lack of talent that the general manager put together or indifference by the players.

paul maurice leaves message for Kirk Muller

Paul Maurice was fired in Carolina and replaced by Kirk Muller and Maurice showed nothing but class upon his exit. Kirk Muller was due to get a chance at a head coaching job because he had done so well as an assistant coach in the league. Allsports thinks Kirk will need quite a bit of luck and motivation to get the Hurricanes into the playoffs because they are pretty thin once you get past Staal, Skinner and Ward. I just don’t see them as a playoff team. Oh and by the way they lost last night in Muller’s coaching debut.

So another Grey Cup game is in the books for the sports news and sports on the web. For those of you not familiar with the history and tradition of the Grey Cup it was the 99th game. Yes the old girl will be a century old next year.

Wally Buono, Head Coach of the B.C. Lions

Wally Buono, matched Hugh Campbell and Don Matthews with five Grey Cup wins. Buono won once as a player with Montreal in the famed Staples Ice Bowl game in Montreal in 1977. He now has four titles as a coach. B.C. did not start the season well and lost their first five games and were 1-6 at one point. But they turned it around in a big way winning 12 of 13 to win the Grey Cup.

Canada Celebrates the 99th Grey Cup game

Allsports article on the 99th Grey Cup game in Vancouver between the B.C. Lions and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Like most Grey Cups it should be a great game.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

So up here in Canada, north of the 49th parallel, the 99th Grey Cup game is the big sports news in the print media and on the web. The game is taking place in the newly face lifted BC place in Vancouver. The League is calling it a neutral site game but don’t you believe it. The B.C. Lions will have the “Lions” share of the crowd support.

The Grey Cup, the award for Canadian Football supremacy

The game pits the Eastern Conference Champion, Winnipeg Blue Bombers against the Western Conference Champion, B.C. Lions and if previous Grey Cup games are any indication it should be a seesaw battle right down to the final whistle.

Crosby does not disappoint in his season debut

Allsports article on the return of Sidney Crosby to game action in the NHL. He had four points on the night in his season debut, a 5-0 win over the NY Islanders. Not a bad nights work I must say.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

So the biggest news for hockey in the sports news and sports on the web was the return of Sidney Crosby to game action last night. The National Hockey League in general and the Pittsburgh Penguins in particular can now breathe a  sigh of relief at having the franchise back on the ice. It has been almost eleven months of concussion issues since Crosby last laced up the Blades in game action and Crosby did not disappoint in his season deput

Sidney Crosby's 1st goal in his Season Debut

Crosby looked like he had not missed a step and controlled the game from the outset. He scored his first goal on his third shift of the game and was dangerous every time he was on the ice. The evening was a huge success as he scored two goals and added two assists in the 5-0 drubbing of the New York Islanders.  His first goal was vintage Crosby and here is the video evidence for your enjoyment.

The Canadian Football League is an entertaining game

Allsports article on the Canadian Football League Conference Final match ups. Historically they have always been great and entertaining games down to the last second

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

So up here in Canada we have our own brand of football for the sports news and sports on the web. It is the Canadian Football League and the Conference Championships are today. It is a great game and always very entertaining. You only get three downs so you better be able to pass the football or you are not going to be moving the chains. The field is wider and longer than the National Football League too, and the League has been in existence officially since 1958 but the Grey Cup has been awarded since 1909 when it was donated by the then Governor General of Canada, Earl Grey.

The Grey Cup, the award for Canadian Football supremacy

This year the Hamilton Tiger-Cats travel to Winnipeg to take on the Bombers for the right to represent the East in the Grey Cup, while out West the Edmonton Eskimos go to Vancouver for a date with the B.C. Lions. Last week the Ticats put out the defending champion, Montreal Alouettes in overtime by a 52-44 score. It was the most points ever scored in CFL history for a playoff game.

Smokin Joe Frazier could not win his toughest Fight

Allsports article on the passing of Joe Frazier at the age of 67 from liver cancer. He was one of the best heavy weights back when boxing was the sweet science.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

Allsports was going to talk a bit on the Chicago Bears big win in Philadelphia on Monday night to keep their playoff hopes alive, staying one win behind Detroit in the  NFC North.  But sadly with the passing of Joe Frazier I thought I would do something about him.

Joe Frazier a few short months ago

Frazier passed away last Monday at the age of 67 from liver cancer. Back when he fought, that was when boxing was boxing and it meant something to be the Heavy Weight Champion. Back then you had Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Jimmy Ellis and Canada’s own George Chuvalo to name a few. Some all out wars took place on the canvas.

Done with Baseball, lets get on with Hockey

Allsports is a little surprised by Toronto and Edmonton's fast start to the NHL season. Also a humorous video from the Swedish Elite League, celebration Hugs.

So now that the Baseball Gloves and Baseball Bats have been put away until next spring it is time for allsports to focus his attention to Hockey with the odd bit of Football for the sports news and sports on the web.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Logo

So here we are in November and allsports has to check twice to make sure his eyes are not deceiving him. There are the Toronto Maple Leafs sitting at the top of the standing for not just their division, but the entire National Hockey League. With a record of 9-3-1 and 19 points they are tied with Pittsburgh but have played one less game. Pretty heady heights for Leafs Nation but the season is still young so we won’t start planning the parade just yet. Lets see where we are at once the new year rolls around. The Leafs entertain the Cup Champion, Boston Bruins on Saturday at the ACC.  Out west another surprise  is a young and talented Edmonton Oiler’s team which got off to a fast 8-2-2 record. Can they keep that pace up out there as well.

Rangers choke on Cardinal feathers

Allsports article on the St. Louis Cardinals come back to beat the Texas Rangers and win the Fall Classic. Why did the Rangers choke in a tough loss to swallow

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

So the Baseball sports news and sports on the web is over for the next little while and Texas ended up coughing up another hair ball in the World Series. There were a few things that played against the Rangers in the Fall Classic but the bottom line is, when you have your heel  on the opponents throat,  you have to finish them off and Texas just could not get the job done. Maybe allsports jinxed them by predicting they would win. Lord knows I was brutal in the prediction department this year with the worst record I have ever had but that’s why the games are played. You could also say that the Cardinals were destined to win the Championship with the way they finished the season and the way they performed right through the playoffs. Allsports thought they may have it together when they put the Phillies out. I think I stated in that first playoff post that the Cardinals would need some divine intervention to get past Philadelphia. They did and seemed to have something looking out for them all the way through the playoffs. The Rangers sure would not argue, having the Cardinals down to their final strike on two occasions in game six and letting them up off the carpet.

So what happened to the Rangers that put them behind the eight ball. In hindsight here are some of the things that worked against them.

Friday, October 28, 2011

Did everyone watch game six of the World Series last night? Wow what a battle. The Texas Rangers had the St. Louis Cardinals down to their final strike, not once but twice in the game and still could not put the Cardinals away to claim their first #WorldSeries title.

The Cardinals trailed five times in the game and kept coming back to tie it up. St. Louis native son, #DavidFreese was the hero on a team full of heroes and likely or should get a street named after him. Freese was clutch at the plate. He tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out, two run triple off Feliz to send the game into extra innings. Then after the cardinals had held the Rangers in the top half of the 11th inning, Freese lead off the bottom half of the inning with a walk off solo home run that pushed the Rangers to a seventh game tonight at Busch Stadium.

The Series is the first to go the full seven games since 2002.

It will be hard for game seven to match the drama of game six.

The baseball sports news and sports on the web for this years World Series is starting to get interesting. With two straight wins Texas finds themselves with a one game lead heading back to the Midwest for the series finale in St. Louis.

Major League Baseball's championship trophy

The Texas Rangers had to regroup after the Cardinals and Albert Pujols had hammered them 16-7 in the opener of the series shift to Texas. Their normally reliable bullpen had been lite up by St. Louis on the night and appeared to be in tatters. Texas needed a strong pitching effort in game four and that’s exactly what they got.

Major League Baseball's championship trophy

Allsports here with a brief update on the Baseball sports news and sports on the web. So everyone was talking about the Texas Rangers coming home and putting up some big offensive numbers in the World Series. Problem was Albert Pujols and his Cardinal teammates were not listening and they decided to be the ones swinging the bats. Pujols bat woke up in a big way as he banged out five hits, including the fourth three-home run game in World Series history, driving in six runs. He joins Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson on that elite list. It was arguably the greatest single offensive game by a single player in World Series history.

The Texas bats came alive just enough in the top of the ninth inning last night to squeak out a 2-1 victory in St. Louis. But Texas with a bloop single, a walk and two sacrifice fly's got just enough to tie the series. http://amplify.com/u/a1f9fa

Taylor Fedun, Another victim of Touch Icing?

Allsports article on some observations with the new head shot rule, discipline and the need for some interference if the NHL keeps touch icing in the game.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com
Allsports

Hi everyone, allsports here for some hockey sports news and sports on the web. So what does everyone think about the NHL preseason so far. The new sheriff in town, Brendan Shanahan,  has already been quite busy handing out suspensions and the regular season has not even started yet. Allsports knows what they are trying to accomplish with the new rule on head shots but what I fear might happen is the NHL may become the NCHL (No Contact Hockey League). Players will become afraid to make a hit for fear of getting suspended. All of the responsibility will fall on the hitter while the puck carrier can carry on, on their merry way. I am sorry but some responsibility has to be taken on the part of the puck carrier. If you have to keep looking down to see if the puck is on your stick then maybe you are not a good enough player to be in the league. The puck carrier has to ensure that he is not putting himself in a vulnerable position. Yes the defender has to be aware of hits to the head but the offensive player has to ensure he is not putting himself in a precarious position. Back in the day we were taught two things right off the get go. Keep your stick down on the ice and have your head on a swivel to be aware of everything on the ice. If not someone was going to take your head off.

A wild finish to the MLB regular season

Allsports article on the wild finish to the regular season for the wild card birth and his opinions on what to expect in the first round of the MLB Playoffs.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com
Allsports

Hello everyone, allsports here with some baseball sports news and sports on the web. So was that one wild finish to the Major League Baseball season or what. Not only did the Boston Red Sox have a melt down but the Atlanta Braves did them one better, well one and a half better or worse to be exact. It was likely the first time in MLB history that two teams, one in each league, had such a collapse in the month of September. Boston held a nine game lead on the Tampa Bay Rays at the end of August but a 7-20 record in the home stretch allowed Tampa to overtake them on the last day of the season. In the National League, Atlanta fared even worse. They saw a 10.5 game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals evaporate and found themselves on the outside looking in once the regular season dust had settled. Crazy stuff when not one but two teams give up that many game leads to come out on the short end of the playoff picture. The races were great for the game of baseball  and should add some weight as far as adding another wild card team into the playoff mix. Mind you there would not have been near as much drama had there been two wild card spots open in each league. So maybe they just leave things the way they are. If its not broke, don’t fix it kind of thing.

The 2011 Mann Cup Champions, the Brampton Excelsiors

Allsports article on the Brampton Excelsiors defeating the Langley Thunder four games to one. Laying claim to the 2011 Mann Cup. They are the 2011 Canadian Senior Lacrosse Champions.

The games were fairly close but in the end Brampton had more experience to defeat a Young Langley Thunder squad.

Amplify’d from allsportsontheweb.com

Allsports here with his final Mann Cup sports news and sports on the web article. So the Mann Cup is over for another year and the host city of Langley did a great job of looking after everyone. They did a top notch job of the event and were great to the visitors from Brampton. If you are counting at home it was the 102nd Mann Cup.

Brampton Excelsiors logo

The citizens of Langley did a great job hosting the Mann Cup but it was too bad the home side did not fare a little better on the floor. After two heart breaking one goal losses the Thunder knew their backs were against the wall. They had run out of wiggle room. Although Brampton was a young team they were not nearly as young as the Thunder. They did have previous Mann Cup experience in the locker room and the Brampton squad seemed to ride that through. The likes of Dan Dawson and Anthony Cosmo, guys who knew what it took to win were towers of strength for the Excelsiors.

Allsports here for more Mann Cup sports news and sports on the web. So game 4 went off last night in Langley and the home side was in desperate need of a win to tie the series up. The game was scoreless for 31 minutes and 4 seconds (likely some kind of Mann Cup record for goal drought) with neither team giving an inch on defense. until Athan Iannucci opened the scoring. Mike Grimes made it 2-0 for the home side three minutes later but Dan Dawson got one back for Brampton. Allsports here for some sad sports news and sports on the web. The summer has not been too kind to the NHL and the hockey community in general. To send the hockey community reeling once again.

Russian jet carrying KHL team Lokomotiv

To top off the miserable news Wednesday morning was even worse. TSN was the first to report on the horrific scene from Russia. It was reported that a private jet carrying the KHL team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl appeared to be struggling to gain altitude after leaving the Yaroslavl airport. It then clipped a signal tower and disintegrated into pieces, with most of the the remains settling on the shores of the Volga River. The plane was a Yak-42 with 45 people on board and only two survived. Officials said Russian player Alexander Galimov survived the crash along with a crew member. It was said that Galimov had burns to 80% of his body, not very good odds for survival.

So where allsports left off in his previous post the Major Series Final between Brampton and Peterborough was all tied up at one game each. I mentioned that Brampton had the youth and young legs while Peterborough had the experience. So who do you think won with those considerations?

The last time I wrote I mentioned that Brampton had just defeated Brooklin to move on and that the Peterborough Lakers could do the same against Six Nations. Well they did, taking out the Chiefs 10-3. So now the Brampton Excelsiors will be fighting it out with the Peterborough Lakers to see who will have the right to represent the East in the Mann Cup.

These two teams are pretty evenly matched and the series should go at least six or seven games. You have the youth and young legs of the Excelsiors against the veteran savvy of the Lakers. These two teams are very strong and would give any of the teams in the NLL a run for the money.  The Lakers have the home floor advantage and will get the seventh game if it is needed. The Lakers won the first game of the series at home 9-8 in double overtime and Brampton countered in game two with an 8-5 home win of their own.

Allsports for Sports on the Web

I could not believe that the Toronto Blue Jays did not retaliate against the Orioles when their starting pitcher Jake Arrieta beaned Jose Bautista in the head a couple of weeks back. It was an accident but still the Blue jays should have hit one of the Orioles batters in the ribs with a good fastball just to let them know you don’t screw around with our star player. That in a nut shell is why the Jays are going no where again this year, get tough out there boys and don’t take any shit. Do you think the Red Sox or the Yankees would take that crap, not in your life. That’s why the Jays are 13 games behind the Red Sox with no hope of getting back in the race. Boston does not loose to often to the weak sisters in the league while the Jays always have trouble with the bottom feeders, enough said.

Well allsports was going to talk about the womens lacrosse provincials last weekend in Whitby Ontario but when you are relying on your 16 year old daughter to download the pictures for you sometimes you just have to wait.   Its a very busy life don’t you know and what dad wants seems to take a back seat to other more pressing issues. The camera with the pictures needed disappeared for the weekend and ended up at the Britney Spears concert last night. She went there with her half sister and by all accounts they had a good time. Problem is that it does not help me with the lacrosse post.
