NHL Allstar game uses new format

Allsports article on the NHL Allstar game taking place in Raleigh North Carolina this year. The NFL Pro Bowl is also going on in Hawaii.

The skills competition was last night and the game goes today at 4 PM. The NFL Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii goes tonight at 7 PM. The AFC allstars will take on the NFC allstars. The players from the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers are excused from the game as they are preparing for the Super Bowl next weekend. A game with a little more significance.

Allsports picks Community Owned Green Bay in the Super Bowl

Allsports article on the two Conference Championship games that were played last weekend. Green Bay and Pittsburgh earn the right to play in the 2011 Super Bowl.

So Green Bay and Pittsburgh are off to the Super Bowl. We will have about a week of the talking heads analyzing everything from soup to nuts about the game but when it does arrive it should be a real knock down, drag out affair. Neither team has a cheer leading squad (I thought that was a prerequisite for an NFL team, lol) so there will be no "Eye Candy" for the viewers, too bad. Green Bay was the early favorite by 2.5 points I think but that will likely be changing all week. Green Bay has not been to the Super Bowl since they won it in 1998 with Brett Farve at the helm. Allsports likes Aaron Rogers as a Quarterback and thinks the Packers are destined this year considering the injuries they had to overcome to get to where they are now. So Allsports is picking a Green Bay Packers Super Bowl victory.

Allsports honors Wayne Gretzky on his 50th Birthday

Allsports article on Wayne Gretzky turning 50 years old today. His career and what he meant to hockey in the USA and in southern California. Is he the best ever?

His goal scoring exploits will likely never be matched by another in the NHL. He is a Canadian Jewel and has always acted with the utmost respect and integrity for the game he loves.

So how does the NHL and Garry Bettman repay the guy that put hockey on the map in California, why they don't bother paying him the 8 million he is owed for his interest in the Phoenix Coyotes. Respect and integrity are something Mr. Bettman and the NHL owners are short on.

Here is something a little different for a Monday morning. A friend emailed this link to me and I thought it was worth sharing. People arriving at Heathrow Airport, London, England. Were serenaded by this group. What makes it so much more interesting is that no musical instruments were used. http://amplify.com/u/anhmq http://amplify.com/u/anhmu

The remaining NFL Teams battle for the Conference Championships

Allsports article on the NFL Playoffs, Conference Championship games on Sunday. Who will win? Who do people pick to play for the Super Bowl in Arlington Texas.

The four remaining teams all have one thing in common, a great defense with the Steelers leading the way. As they say defense wins Championships and none of these teams would be here without theirs.

Allsports is predicting a Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers 2011 Super Bowl in Arlington Texas.

Conquer the one thing limiting your success.

This is a straighforward bit of advice to get you past the one thing that's keeping you from the success you so desire. I'm taking this to heart!

A good article for reflection.

Amplify’d from www.bnet.com

What's the One Thing Limiting Your Success?

The other day I was half listening to an interview of a famous actor when something he said got my attention. The guy apparently immigrated to this country with his parents and he realized that, to get a good job, he’d have to improve his ability to speak English.

So he thought, what better way to do that than to take acting classes. And that’s how his acting career began.

Address your weakness. Sounds sort of obvious, doesn’t it? But it got me thinking, how many people really 1) know what’s limiting their success and, 2) force themselves to do something about it?

You know, I’m willing to bet that half the people reading this right now are saying to themselves, Wow, I should do that about [fill in the blank]. But will they … actually do it? Probably not.

I’d also be willing to bet that the other half are in denial, blaming everybody and everything for why they didn’t get ahead instead of doing something about some fear or limitation they were almost surely aware of at one time but have since buried under layers of jealousy and anger targeted at all the wrong people.

Whichever half you’re in, we all have at least one major fear or limitation holding us back. Facing or improving that one thing will almost surely open the door to new opportunities and success. Here are a couple of stories to inspire you to do just that:

  • One of my former CEOs told me a story about how, when he was younger, he was so shy that just the idea of speaking in class and, later on, in a meeting, was so terrifying that he almost passed out from fear. So he got some help, faced his fear every day of his career, and went on to become a senior executive at a Fortune 1000 company and then a successful CEO of a public tech firm.
  • Another successful senior executive was, at one time, stuck in middle management - engineering management, to be specific. And while he’d become adept at presenting to groups, he marveled at the ease with which his sales people interacted and negotiated with customers. So he gave up his 10+ year engineering management career and took a step back to become a salesman and learn the skills he felt he lacked. It worked. That was over 20 years ago. That guy was me.

So the next time you find yourself exploring the blogosphere or Amazon for your next quick-fix of advice, or feeling sorry for yourself or jealous of someone else because she made it and you didn’t, put down the computer, simmer down, relax, and ask yourself: What’s the one thing I need to face, address, or improve to get ahead?

If you do that, I guarantee three things:

  • That you know, on some level, what that one thing is.

  • It will be the highest probability thing you can do to open up new opportunities and increase your success potential.

  • No, it won’t be easy. Yes, it will take work. But the reward will far outweigh all that. Guaranteed.

Brady Ordinary and the Patriots are gone

Allsports article on the Divisional series playoff games in the National Football League last weekend. What happened and how did the predictions come through. Allsports surprised yet again.

The Jets defense deserves credit for shutting Brady and the Patriots down but you have to wonder, did the Patriots leave their best football on the field back in December.

Pittsburgh overcomes two first half turnovers to come back against the Ravens, while the Packers and Bears are dominant in their wins on the NFC side.

Is the WWW (or are WWWE) willing to be caged?

I'm not particularly concerned that the web is threatened by this, If you don't like it, don't use it.

    Amplify’d from www.webpronews.com

Will Apps Unravel the World Wide Web?

The title we went with on this article may come off as a bit sensational, but some pretty high profile web veterans might not think so.

Speaking at Bristol University in the UK, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, had some less than positive things to say this week about the direction the web is taking - the app direction. As quoted by computing.co.uk:
"The debate is a highly overblown issue," said Wales in a response to question about his personal view of net neutrality. "A lot of the things that people are afraid of are in reality a long way from happening. The real threat comes from the apps model."

Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia About Apps as a DangerOn the open internet anyone can develop software and give it away or sell it. "But in the apps model, you have to get Apple's permission," said Wales. "That choke point is very dangerous. It's not theoretical like a network operator potentially shutting out Skype, it's real and it’s happening now."

The words somewhat echo a recent report from the inventor of the web himself - Tim Berners-Lee. Here's a sample from that:
In contrast, not using open standards creates closed worlds. Apple's iTunes system, for example, identifies songs and videos using URIs that are open. But instead of "http:" the addresses begin with "itunes:," which is proprietary. You can access an "itunes:" link only using Apple's proprietary iTunes program. You can't make a link to any information in the iTunes world—a song or information about a band. You can’t send that link to someone else to see. You are no longer on the Web. The iTunes world is centralized and walled off. You are trapped in a single store, rather than being on the open marketplace. For all the store’s wonderful features, its evolution is limited to what one company thinks up.

Other companies are also creating closed worlds. The tendency for magazines, for example, to produce smartphone "apps" rather than Web apps is disturbing, because that material is off the Web. You can't bookmark it or e-mail a link to a page within it. You can’t tweet it. It is better to build a Web app that will also run on smartphone browsers, and the techniques for doing so are getting better all the time.

Smartphone usage continues to skyrocket. Usage of the iPhone in particular is about to as it comes to Verizon. And of course 2011 is the year of the tablet as iPads continue to sell well and all of its competitors come to the market - many powered by App market places.

In other words, don't expect the app model being criticized by these guys to go away anytime soon. Berners-Lee's report also criticized social networks like Facebook for walling off data, which is part of the same issue - a fragmented web, which could hardly be considered a web at all in the traditional sense of the word.

The first definition of "web" listed in Google's definition results is "an intricate network suggesting something that was formed by weaving or interweaving". While there is certainly plenty of room for interweaving within the app model, there is also plenty of room for disconnecting. Of course, when you take the second definition Google provides for "web" perhaps the web is in no danger at all: "an intricate trap that entangles or ensnare its victim."

There are a lot of great apps. There's a reason the web is going in this direction, but will we reach a point where the apps that are supposed to bring more convenience to our lives end up creating an incredible inconvenience? Many of us are bound to reach that point repeatedly.

Luckily, the web as we know it is still here too. It's not really going anywhere, and is readily available from all of our smartphones, tablets, and connected device. It's just that more of the innovation and development may go to serve these fragmented ecosystems rather than focus on the web itself.

Went 2/2 in the prediction department yesterday in the #NFL division games. Lets go #Bears and #Patriots to go 4/4 http://amplify.com/u/bm6hx
Tornto Maple Leafs lost in a shootout to the Calgary Flames last night. It was hard keeping up to hockey and football but managed. All in all it was a pretty good week for the #Leafs, Road wins in Atlanta, LA and San Jose before running out of gas in the desert against the Coyotes. Was it just me or did Aaron Rogers pick the Falcons defense apart much like a Buzzard on a fresh Carcass http://amplify.com/u/bm6fm

The Unpredictable NFL Wild Card Games

Allsports article on the NFL wild card games played this past weekend. Allsports picked 3 of 4 correct. No one saw the upset in Seattle coming. Whats up next.

Baltimore plays their division rivals, the Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Jets travel to Foxborough to play the Patriots. Good luck Jets you will need it.

Seattle takes on DaBears at Soldier Field and Green Bay goes into the deep south for a date with the Atlanta Falcons.

I will give my predictions later in the week. Who do you like? Is your team still in it? Will you bet a few bobbles on the games?

    Sunday, January 9, 2011

#SidneyCrosby still out with a concussion from blind side hit by David Steckel. Crosby was vulnerable on the play and I am sure Steckel saw him there. Is this not what the #NHL wants to be rid of. Any hit to the head is a suspend able offense, accidental or not. The NHL can't afford to have it's best player on the sidelines. If no suspension the NHL is sending the wrong message. Payback could be a bitch for Steckel cause the Penguins won't forget the incident and know Steckel saw Crosby upon further review http://amplify.com/u/bl33q
Saints loose in Seattle in #NFL #Wildcard game. #Allsports thought this was the easy one to predict. Guess that's why they have to play the games, lol. I guess allsports gets another serving of Crow AGAIN http://amplify.com/u/bl32w

A 98 year old woman in the UK wrote this to her bank

This lady, a 98 year old pensioner, got charged the obligatory £30 fee for going overdrawn on her bank account and decided to write a letter to her bank manager.

Below is the letter in all it's awesomeness!!!

    Amplify’d from davidicke.com
A 98 year old woman in the UK wrote this to her bank. The bank manager

thought it amusing enough to have it published in the Times.

    Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to

pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have

elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of

the funds needed to honour it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly

deposit of my Pension, an arrangement, which, I admit, has been in place for

only thirty eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief

window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account £30 by way of

penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me

to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally

attend to your telephone calls and letters, when I try to contact you, I am

confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity

which your bank has become. From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal

    with a flesh-and-blood person.

My mortgage and loan payments will therefore and hereafter no longer be

automatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressed personally and

confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate. Be aware

that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such

an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact Status which I

require your chosen employee to complete. I am sorry it runs to eight

pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows

about me, there is no alternative. Please note that all copies of his or

her medical history must be countersigned by a Solicitor, and the mandatory

details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and

liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.

In due course, I will issue your employee with PIN number which he/she must

quote in dealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28

digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses

required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service. As

they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me, press

    buttons as follows:

1.. To make an appointment to see me.

    2. To query a missing payment..

    3. To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.

    4. To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.

    5. To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.

    6. To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.

    7. To leave a message on my computer (a password to access my computer is

required. A password will be communicated to you at a later date to the

    Authorized Contact.)

    8. To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through to 8.

    9. To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contact will then be put on

hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service. While this

may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the

    duration of the call.

Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an

establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement.

May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous, New Year.

    Your Humble Client

(Remember: This was written by a 98 year old woman; DOESN'T SHE MAKE YOU

    PROUD!
    )

The NFL Playoffs bring you Wildcard Weekend

Allsports article on wild card weekend in the NFL playoffs. Will the wild card teams beat up on the division winners in the two conferences. Allsports thinks that just might happen.

Total Canadian Collapse hands the Russians the Gold

Allsports article on the Canadian Junior Hockey team having a total melt down in the third period to surrender the gold medal to the Russians. It was a team effort.

Allsports was forced to eat crow because I predicted a Canadian victory.

Full marks have to be given to a Russian team that showed so much character, not only in this game but in all their medal round appearances. They came back from down 3-1 against the Finnish team, came back against the Swedes, so it may be fitting that they can put the Canadians in there with the other victims.

Old time Canadian Hockey in win over the USA

Allsports article on the Team Canada world junior teams dominating win over the USA in world junior semi final action. Team Canada now plays Russia for the GOLD.

Canada controlled the boards in the game and crashed the front of the US net, winning the game 4-1. Only a valiant effort from Jack Campbell in the American goal kept the game respectable.

Bring on the Russians, they will find their face in the glass too.

Canada draws the USA in semi final of World Junior Hockey

Allsports article on the World Junior Hockey Championships being held in Buffalo New York. Russia is playing Sweden in semi final #1 while the USA and Canada square off tonight.

The first semi final just ended, Here is how

Russia just went up 2-0 on the Swedes on what appeared to be a blown icing call. Sweden now has to try and dig themselves out of the hole they are in.

Sweden battles back and goes ahead in a wild finish, Russia ties it up in the last minutes and a half forcing overtime. Russia wins it in the shootout.
